News & Press: Department of Buildings Updates

Building Owners Must Post Building Energy Efficiency Rating Labels By October 30, 2020

Wednesday, September 9, 2020

The Department of Buildings is reminding building owners that they are required to post Building Energy Efficiency Rating Labels no later than October 30, 2020, and October 30 of each year after 2020. Based on Local Law 33 of 2018, as amended by Local Law 95 of 2019, owners of buildings over 25,000 sq. ft. – or multiple buildings on a lot totaling 100,000 sq. ft. or more – that appear on the NYC Benchmarking Covered Building List, must post a Building Energy Efficiency Rating Label in a conspicuous location near each public entrance to their buildings.

Starting October 1, 2020, owners can access and print the label through a new Building Energy Efficiency Rating tab in the DOB NOW Public Portal. The label will include the energy efficiency score of the building and an energy efficiency rating of A through F. Failure to post the label within 30 days after October 1 may result in a civil penalty of $1250. Please see our Service Notice and visit the Department's Benchmarking page for more information.
